Crown Moulding and an Arch

We recently completed a small home remodeling project that made a huge difference for our Downingtown PA client.  She had owned and lived in the home for more than 10 years and wanted to add a little more pop and interest to the first floor living area.  She was ready to remodel and was interested in having decorative crown moulding installed which we were happy to do. With 9′ ceilings in the home, we recommended a 4 5/8″ crown moulding to give the proper sense of mass and strength.  However, she also asked for our direction and recommendations on what could be done between her kitchen and dining room, which as you can see, lacked definition.  She just felt like it needed something more.

This shows the bland and uninteresting transition from the kitchen into the dining room.

She wanted something that would visually separate the two rooms and yet still feel open.  Our designer proposed creating a broken archway with curved colonial trim across the top.  This simple, elegant yet distinctive architectural element would be a great complement to the decorative crown moulding that we planned to install.  As you can see below, the difference between before and after is dramatic and yet it seems as if it has always there.

Decorative mouldings are an easy and not so expensive way to dress up a room and create a more formal atmosphere.

While we were there, we also replaced the deteriorated arched trim on her front porch. The builder had used plywood which had begun to delaminate and rot.  So we removed the rotten wood, repaired some of the structure behind the trim, installed new metal flashing to prevent water infiltration, and then installed new cellular PVC trim–a completely maintenance free product that we have been recommending for several years.

The rest of the trim was rotten too.

Some relatively simple upgrades added value and aesthetic appeal to her home.  Another happy client with a Space that she Loves Coming Home to.

Great remodel guys! Im in Temecula, CA across the country.. Did you guys use MDF for the crown molding in that room? Do you use flex molding for the top of the archway? That’s how we would do a paint grade install, but I always wonder how other contractors do it in different areas. Have a good one,

    Hi Brian!

I’m that happy Downingtown homeowner !! Still loving the work that you & your team did for me in June 2013. I’m glad to find the before & after pictures. I’m kicking myself for not taking a bunch of photos while you performed your magic.

I have a friend in want of an updated bathroom and I gave her your information today.

    Happy 2015!
